fall 2003
for the fall semester i moved to
memphis, tn to attend their college
of art, where i currently am in my
last semester, there was much
adjustment this semester...i
continued my studies in
three-dimensional design
sculpture workshop
this assignment was supposed to be a freeing exercise,
somehow i took it too literally and felt trapped.  a change at
about week 10 allowed me to save the project and be free
(left) water color backgrounds 14 x 23" and 11.5 x 30" on
water color paper
(lower left) tissue-paper/resin foliage before paint
(below) a bridge maquette some tissue-paper/resin
foliage and some of the "set" bridges; various sets
(right) an ink-jet print on tracing paper of a "set" bridge
in-front of a background with colored lighting, which was
then enhanced digitally in photoshop
(above) using the various ink-jet prints over a wire
armature, i constructed a bridge 5.5 x 4 x 23"
my mid-term project for the same class, i used
second-hand clothing (mostly shirts) to make a four
layer dress.  i quilted them together, sewing diagonal
lines creating thousands of rectangles half an inch by
two inches.  i then used a technique called slashing and
(with a blade) tore through the top three layers  allowing
for the inner layers to peek out from behind the black.
both sides are complete 33 x 19"

my final project for this class
i developed patterns for this "lab coat" and
fabricated it using a synthetic sheer due to it's
total impracticality as a lab coat fabric.  i
embroidered mathmatic and scientific
equations and formuli all over it. i made blue
flames around the collar and sculpted a burner
stand and an erlehnmyer flask at the head.  in
the pocket are: a chisel, china marker and an
art blade.
47 x 21"
printmaking

these are images of in-class
assignments and weekly
homework
on the left is a small dye sample
re-used as an embroidery sample,
a lizard pattern "toy", resist dye
sample (about 8" square), gel
medium transfer and along the
bottom an exercise in screen and
monoprinting
on the right, 8" square dye
samples using different techniques
on natural and synthetic cloth
(these samples were later used to
make a couple of purses, one of
which is shown at the top of the
page )
