i pinned the embroidery on
first to plan spacing and
location
this was better than
embroidering the whole thing
by hand, but it still wasn't easy
to sew on only working with
one side.  also, the new
needles i bought were so much
better than the first three
packs, they are called glovers
and the tip has a pyramid
shape instead of the point with
a broad neck and tapering
body like the other sets.  the
glovers were much sharper
(good or bad?) they go into
the leather much more easily,
but they also go into my
fingers much further than the
other ones, cauing bloody
fingertips and giving me the
thankfully temporary nickname
of "band-aid girl"...not to
worry the needles get dull
VERY quickly

because the decision to add a slogan was made after i had begun covering
the body, it made the most sense to come up with a solution to the
problem of embroidering onto a fabric that you could only work one side
of.  ethan suggested machine embroidering on water soluble  stabilizer.  it
was an interesting idea. so we went with it.  unfortunately i didn't realize
you had to make several layers more than regular embroidery, so when we
put it in water the whole thing fell apart. so i started again.  several hours
later it was ok (i was so nervous though i didn't even put the second set in
water, i just trimmed really closely, and after i had sewn them on i wet
them with a paint brush and pulled at the edges). after the whole process, i
wouldn't recommend it.  if i could do it again i would have machine
embroidered onto a few layers of red cotton and trimmed around the
letters....live and learn....
but many thanks to ethan for sticking with me until nearly 2am and
donating so much red thread (it took way more than i had planned for)
